Training Workshop on “How to Become an Exporter in Agri-food Business” for SMEs in Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces
The Department of Food Science and Technology at the Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture proudly organized a comprehensive three-day training workshop titled “How to Become an Exporter in Agri-food Business ” for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from the Uva, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces. This impactful initiative was made possible through financial collaboration with DevPro Guarantee Ltd., facilitated by Oxfam Australia.
The workshop, held on December 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2023, at Uva Wellassa University, aimed to equip SMEs with the essential knowledge and skills required to thrive in the Agri-food export industry. It was a success, with 50 SMEs and potential exporters participating in the Agricultural sector. Through expert-led sessions and practical insights, participants gained valuable insights into the intricacies of becoming successful exporters in this dynamic sector.
Prof. W.A.J.P. Wijesinghe, Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, welcomed the gathering at the inauguration ceremony. The event was marked by insightful speeches delivered by distinguished guests, including Prof. Saman K. Herath, Dean, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, Mr. Nadaraja Ravikumar from Chrysalis, and Dr. Kulanayagam Kuleswarakumar, Agriculture Production Specialist, representing DevPro Guarantee Ltd.
Meaningful discussions encompassed key aspects essential for successful exporting during the workshop. The topics covered included steps to successful exporting, export procedures and regulations, international standard certifications/system certifications, smart export packaging techniques, labeling prerequisites, and food processing machinery innovations. Additionally, there was a focus on value additions tailored to meet international market requirements. The workshop benefited greatly from the expertise and contributions of distinguished resource persons: Mr. Jagath Kulathilaka from Faculty of Management; Dr. Prasad Mahindarathna, and Ms A.M.C. Amarakoon, Department of Export Agriculture; Prof. W.A.J.P. Wijesinghe, Dr. W.M.N.M. Wijesundara, Dr. A.M.N.L. Abesinghe, Dr. K.N. Wijayasekara, and Ms. K.P.M. Kahandage from Department of Food Science & Technology; Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture. The workshop also benefited from the valuable contribution of Mr. Eranda Kandekumbura, Founder of Unique Business Solutions (PVT) Ltd., Kandy, who provided external industry expertise. The practical aspect was enriched by the experiences shared by Mr. M.R.S.C. Bandara, a Tea and Spice entrepreneur, and Mrs. Anusha Rajapaksha, representing the 50 SMEs.
The second day featured an engaging field exposure visit to Pelwatte Dairy Industries Ltd. in Buttala and Shehani Ayurvedha Products, Buttala. During this insightful excursion, participants had the opportunity to explore and discuss the practical aspects of exporting Agri-Food products. The visit provided valuable hands-on experiences and discussions that enriched their understanding of the exportation process.
The workshop was executed with success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the coordinators, Dr. A.M.N.L. Abesinghe and Dr. W.M.N.M. Wijesundara, and all the members of the Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. A.M.N.L.
