Department of English Language Teaching (DELT)


The Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) was established as the third Department of Study, attaching temporary to the Faculty of Management of Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka by the Extraordinary Gazette Notification No: 2079/12 of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka issued on Monday, July 09th 2018.

The Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) has now organized all its courses to be delivered by the members of the Academic Staff of the DELT in an organized way expecting productive results to be benefitted by all the undergraduates of all Study Programmes of the University irrespective of Departments and Faculties as the establishment of the DELT is for the entire university.

The Department also ensures aligning all its courses realizing the Vision of the University “To be the Centre of Excellence for Value Addition to National Resource Base” imparting Essential Skills Development (ESD) by means of innovative pedagogical practices deviating from traditional methodologies

Bachelor of Arts Honours in English Language & Applied Linguistics Degree Programme

(BAHONS in Eng. Lan & App Ling)

Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) has taken the necessary initiatives to offer a full time four year honours study programme on English Language & Applied Linguistics with a view to provide an in-depth insights into English Language and Applied Linguistics with a strong focus on English Language Skills Development, the scientific study of language in its application to gain communication skills, advanced reading and writing skills, analytical and problem solving skills, IT skills, presentation skills, organizing, planning and executing skills, research skills, reflective skills, most importantly with a long term objective the leadership & decision making skills, sector specific skills and adaptation skills with the right attitude and mindsets. Thus, the Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) attempts to empower an interested group of deserving undergraduates equipped with aforesaid attitudes, skills and knowledge optimizing the creative and innovative nature of entrepreneurial education to aligned with our Vision of UWU : “To be the Centre of Excellence for Value Addition to National Resources Base” to fulfill our Mission : “To produce well-rounded, employable and entrepreneurial graduates equipped with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to make an outstanding contribution to the national development whilst excelling in teaching, learning and research with a strong emphasis on value addition to the national resources”

Content of the Programme

The study programme is comprised with three major components that are unique to Uva Wellassa University. They are namely;

  • ESD Component (Essential Skills Development) in which we empower our UWU graduates with English Language Skills, Communication Skills, Quantitative Reasoning, Computer handling, Sinhala Language for Tamil Students and Tamil Language for Sinhala Students with a view to provide market driven skills required

  • BGE Component (Broad General Education) where general knowledge requirement is provided with a view to lay the firm foundation for UWU graduates. In this, History, Geography, Ethics, Basics of Law, and Moral Studies are taught in the blended mode contributing to mould a decent UWU graduate with an identity to distinguish UWU graduates from that of other graduates.

  • Programme Specific Curricula in which we provide required knowledge and the training including necessary skills in research and hands on experience from industrial training programme

Thus, a number of significant newest course units on English Language and Applied Linguistics encapsulating major areas of English Language, Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology, ESA course units, Translations, Academic Discourse and writing, English Literature, Essential Mathematics for Language Studies, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Research Methods in Language Sciences, Business Information Technology, Computational Linguistics, Neuro linguistics, Communication disorders and Speech therapy, and Seminars on National Education in Sri Lanka are imparted to our undergraduates to be all-rounders fitting into any given industry.

Other Privileges

  • The undergraduates of Bachelor of Arts Honours in English Language and Applied Linguistics Degree Programme (BAHons in English Lan & App Ling) shall enjoy the privilege of earning a worldwide recognized and accepted certificate for Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) issued by the Cambridge Examinations at their third year. This is a certificate which exhibits the professional credential of the graduates teaching English to speakers of other languages.
  • These graduates are also able to apply for an examination by the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms to be eligible for Sworn Translators at their third year for they complete a number of translations related course units

Entry Requirement

  1. At least “S” Grades in any three subjects at the G.C.E. (A/L) Examinations (2021)
  2. “C” Grade for English Language at G.C.E. (O/L) Examination and a “C’ Grade for Mathematics at the G.C.E. (O/L) Examination
