The Career Compass 2024 event, organized by the Animal Science Alumni Association, took place on August 3, 2024, with the participation of more than 300 students and academic staffs of the Department of Animal Science. This program was specifically designed to provide all students of the Animal Production and Food Technology programs, especially those in their 3rd and 4th years, with a comprehensive understanding of their future career prospects. It aimed to equip students with crucial knowledge about the various career paths available within the animal science and food technology sectors.
The event featured insightful presentations and discussions by successful alumni, who are now working in various fields related to animal science and food technology. These professionals shared their experiences, career trajectories, and practical advice to help students make informed decisions as they prepare to enter the workforce.
Key Objectives of Career Compass 2024
- To provide a platform for students to interact with industry professionals and alumni who have excelled in diverse fields within animal science and food technology.
- To give students insights into various career opportunities available to them after graduation.
- To help students understand the skills, knowledge, and experiences required to succeed in the professional world.

The event was inaugurated with a welcome address from the Animal Science Alumni Association President, and special keynotes by Prof. Saman Herath, Dean, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, and Prof. Dinesh Jayasena, Head, Department of Animal Science.
The keynote speech focused on the evolving landscape of the animal production and food technology industries and the emerging opportunities for graduates in both local and international markets.
Following the keynote, a panel of alumni from different sectors – ranging from Dairy product processing, animal husbandry and feed, veterinary sciences, food processing, and quality control, to agribusiness and sustainable agriculture – engaged in a lively discussion. They highlighted the diverse roles they have taken on since graduation, addressing how they navigated challenges and found success.
Students were given the opportunity to ask questions during both panel discussions and individual alumni presentations. Topics covered included career growth, opportunities in research and development, the importance of internships, and advice on building professional networks.
A dedicated networking session followed the presentations, where students had the chance to engage directly with the alumni speakers, exchange contact details, and seek advice on personal career development.
