Introduction

“Geuda” is one of the varieties of Corundum found in Sri Lanka abundantly and has a less marketable value because the attractiveness of the “Geuda” stone is not enough to stand with other gem varieties. Nevertheless, these “Geuda” stones could be converted into sapphire varieties with different treatments. Heat treatment of “Geuda” has become more prominent in Sri Lanka since late 1970 with enhanced knowledge to convert “Geuda” into premium blue colour sapphire.

Uva province also consists of many gem varieties, including “Geuda.” Passara, Lunugala, Badalkubura, Monaragala, Wellawaya and Mahiyangana areas are famous for various types of “Geuda”.

Objectives

To provide Geuda heat treatment service to the Uva region
To guide Uva regional gem traders to identify treatable Geuda types
